For most Malaysians, "putting money in ASNB" means parking cash with Permodalan Nasional Berhad and watching it pay 5-6% a year. The catch: ASNB runs 18 different funds, only some are open to all Malaysians, some are fixed-price and some are NAV-based, and the names you might remember from a decade ago aren't all current. Here's the 2026 picture.

First — ASW doesn't exist anymore

Amanah Saham Wawasan 2020 (ASW 2020) was renamed in October 2018 to ASM 2 Wawasan6. The fund still operates with the same structure (fixed RM1/unit, open to all Malaysian citizens, 51% Bumi / 49% non-Bumi quota), but if your bank statement still says "ASW 2020" or you search Google for ASW, what you're looking at is now ASM 2 Wawasan.

That makes the actual choice in 2026:

  • ASB — Bumi only, fixed RM1/unit
  • ASB 2 — Bumi only, fixed RM1/unit
  • ASM — all Malaysians, fixed RM1/unit
  • ASM 2 Wawasan (formerly ASW 2020) — all Malaysians, fixed RM1/unit
  • ASM 3 (formerly ASW 2050) — all Malaysians, fixed RM1/unit
  • ASN Equity / ASN Imbang / ASN Sara series — all Malaysians, variable NAV

Fixed-price vs variable-price funds

Fixed-price funds (ASB, ASB 2, ASM, ASM 2, ASM 3) hold a unit at RM 1.00 forever. Returns come entirely from the annual income distribution — typically declared in cents per unit (sen). RM 0.0575 dividend per unit on a RM 1.00 unit = a 5.75% effective return. Lower volatility, predictable, ideal for conservative investors.

Variable-price funds (ASN Equity, ASN Imbang, ASN Sara) hold units at fluctuating Net Asset Value (NAV) that rises and falls with market conditions. Returns come from both income distribution and unit-price appreciation. Higher volatility, potentially much higher returns — ASN Equity funds posted 23-33% rolling one-year returns through 20245.

ASB's FY2025 5.75 sen/unit broke down as 5.20 sen dividend + 0.55 sen bonus, distributing RM 10.4 billion across 11.4 million unitholders — the highest payout since FY2018's 6.5 sen + 0.5 sen bonus1. Total cumulative ASB distributions since inception: RM 206.7 billion.

Across all 18 ASNB funds, 2025 distributions totalled RM 15.3 billion — the highest year on record5.

Eligibility — Bumi vs non-Bumi access

FundBumiputeraNon-Bumi (Chinese, Indian, etc.)Notes
ASB, ASB 2✅❌Bumi-only by mandate. Exceptions: Siamese/Thai, Portuguese/Eurasian descent, Muslim converts7.
ASM, ASM 2 Wawasan, ASM 3✅✅Open to all Malaysians age 6 months+. 51% Bumi / 49% non-Bumi quota — funds often sell out for non-Bumi tranche quickly.
ASN Equity series, ASN Imbang, ASN Sara✅✅No quota; always open for variable-NAV funds.

If you're non-Bumi and you want fixed-price ASNB exposure, you queue for ASM tranches. PNB regularly opens new ASM unit tranches when capacity allows — set up alerts via the myASNB app.

Worked example — RM 10,000 + RM 500/month over 20 years

Take a 30-year-old with RM 10,000 lump sum + RM 500 monthly contribution for 20 years, projected at each fund's recent average distribution rate. All scenarios assume distributions are auto-reinvested (the ASNB default).

FundAverage annual returnCapital after 20 yearsTotal contributedProfit
ASB at 5.75%5.75%~RM 255,800RM 130,000RM 125,800
ASM at 4.25%4.25% (curated reference)~RM 212,000RM 130,000RM 82,000
ASN Equity at 10% (cautious avg)10%~RM 453,000RM 130,000RM 323,000

(Calculations use monthly compounding with the stated annual rate applied to opening + new contributions each month. Variable-price returns are not guaranteed — ASN Equity's 10% figure is a cautious long-run average against recent 1-year rolling returns of 23-33%; many years will be much higher, some will be losses.)

The headline: over 20 years, ASB's 5.75% beats ASM's 4.25% by ~RM 43,800. ASN Equity's volatile 10% beats ASB by ~RM 197,200 — but with material risk of capital loss in any given year.

You can model your own starting capital, monthly contribution, time horizon, and projected rate through the Celik Finance investment calculator — it handles ASNB, EPF, voluntary EPF, and custom compound scenarios.

Fees, tax, and zakat treatment

  • Upfront fee: 0% on fixed-price funds (ASB, ASM family). ASN variable-NAV funds typically charge a small sales charge per transaction7.
  • Annual management fee: ASB 0.35% p.a. (deducted before income distribution).
  • Tax: ASNB income distributions are tax-exempt under Income Tax Act 1967 (Schedule 6 Para 35) for individuals — full amount credits to your unit balance, no Form B declaration.
  • Zakat: ASB / ASM units are subject to zakat on harta (wealth-based zakat) if total ASNB holding plus other zakat-able wealth meets the 2026 nisab of RM 33,996 and the haul is satisfied. Some unitholders authorise PNB to deduct zakat automatically (2.5%) — opt in via the myASNB app.

Which one for you

ProfileBest fit
Bumi, conservative, long-termASB — highest fixed-price return, RM 200k cap
Bumi, already maxed RM 200k ASB capASB 2 then ASM family
Non-Bumi, conservative, long-termASM or ASM 2 Wawasan (formerly ASW 2020) — watch for tranche openings
Anyone, higher risk tolerance, longer horizonASN Equity 2/3/5 — variable NAV, 10%+ historical
Anyone, need liquidity within 1-2 yearsPark in EPF voluntary contribution (6.15% FY2025, tax-deductible) or 12-month FD instead
Couple with dual eligibilityBumi spouse → ASB. Non-Bumi spouse → ASM family. Don't pool into one name.

For most Malaysians, the right answer is a mix: max your eligible fixed-price ASNB allocation first (ASB up to RM 200k cap for Bumi; ASM tranches when open for non-Bumi), then layer ASN Equity for higher-return exposure. Run the math on your specific allocation, monthly top-up, and time horizon through the Celik Finance investment calculator.
